September 2004: My friend and fellow Greenpeace campaigner James Gormley at the "solar fax station" he designed to encourage voters to write to Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition leader Mark Latham in the lead up to the 2004 election. Photo: Iain Murray
13 September 2009: The Monty Python-styled "Ministry of Energy, Resources and Silly Walks" perform at Hazelwood Power Station in Morwell during the "Switch Off Hazelwood" protests. I designed this piece of satirical theatre in tribute to James. Hazelwood was finally decommissioned in 2017.
31 March 2010: Inner-city weekly newspaper The Melbourne Times publishes a full-page open letter calling on Immigration Minister Chris Evans to exercise his power to intervene in the case of my friend and former housemate, who faced imminent forced removal from Australia. I wrote and designed this ad after spending three years building a quiet community campaign to keep my friend safe. After the ad was published, the Department referred my friend's case to the Minister, who intervened to grant him permanent residence. My friend still lives in Melbourne.
7 April 2016: Jasmine Pilbrow (right) leads a march to Ringwood Magistrates Court. I was part of a team of volunteers providing court solidarity for Jasmine after she peacefully prevented the forced transfer of a Tamil man seeking asylum by refusing to take her seat on a Qantas flight. 2 September 2016: Jasmine Pilbrow's supporters gather at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court before her second hearing. I coordinated the event and designed the departure board-style placards, which flipped over to read "STOP SENDING PEOPLE TO DANGER". Photo: Rod Hysted.
26 October 2018: A mobile billboard drives past the Qantas AGM in Brisbane as refugee campaigners gather outside. Global advocacy organisation SumofUs organised the billboard after my #QantasTakeAStand social media campaign inspired the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility to launch a shareholder campaign. 26 October 2018: Local refugee campaigners gather outside the Qantas AGM in Brisbane. I helped the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility and Refugee Action Collective QLD organise the event. Photo: Alex Bainbridge.
26 October 2018: Home to Bilo campaigner Angela Fredericks asks CEO Alan Joyce if Qantas will rule out separating children from parents during the forced transfer and removal of people seeking asylum. I travelled to Brisbane to assist and helped Angela refine her question. The following year, 24 per cent of Qantas shareholders defied the board's recommendation and voted for the airline to end its involvement in forced transfers and removals - the biggest vote against an Australian board on human rights. 12 September 2023: The Dandenong Star publishes a front page story and open letter calling on Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to intervene in the case of Dixtan Aralruban, a Tamil man facing imminent forced removal from Australia. I advised the Tamil Refugee Council on strategy, and drafted this advertisement and a Change.org petition based on his mother Reeta's testimony. Dixtan was released from immigration detention in January 2025 and granted permanence in August 2025.
